HI THERE!
So this is my blog.
I hope you like it.
If you don’t, I heard your favorite show is on t.v. right now. ... Bye...
BLOG NUMERO ONE: “I’m just Joking.”
I hate when comedians call their jokes "jokes" or "bits" on stage. It drives me nuts.
It takes away every illusion the audience had of them until that moment.
I think it's endearing when audience members think that stand-up comedians make everything up on the spot. As if we’re all just having a normal conversation with our buddy. It’s just like any other day spewing out side splitting anecdotes that make the listener think, "how do they come up with this stuff??"
I feel like whenever comedians say something along the lines of, "this next joke," or "this new bit," they create a barrier between them and their audience. When they come on stage and work hard to get to know their audience and relate to them, revealing that all they are doing is a series of set ups and punchlines is disappointing. You know, the feeling you get when your favorite reputable actress gets a boob job. Like… Heidi Montag. (JK.)
This being said, I do feel that there is an exception to my nit picking. When a comedian reveals that what they are saying is a joke in the form of a joke, I find it hilarious. An example is Josh Sneed. He has a joke where in the end he reveals something to the effect of, “oh my God, I can’t believe I just pretended to have a girlfriend for that joke.”
In the end though this is just my personal preference, and I myself have even fallen victim to explaining to the crowd that a failed joke was a “new one.” I even find myself saying “just kidding” after a punchline is met by silence, as a defense mechanism or something. Although I think I am a lot more conscious of it now and won’t even say it at open mics where the majority of the room is made up of other comedians that are past the chimera.
Yes, I did have to look that last word up.
Yes, I realize I have lost credibility at this point.
Yes, I will use the ‘synonyms’ button on word over and over again. Why? Because I like alternatives. How? Simply right click on your word if you are on a pc, and roll over the synonyms button. : )
How do you think I passed high school?
Sincerely,
Amanda Brooke Perrin.

Personally I don't mind when the commedian sets up that barrier sometimes, but it has to be done tastefully. Like for a joke that's clearly about performing, rather than something that happened to their Mom. The barrier creates a kind of context.
ReplyDeleteAnd synonyms are the bomb! Lol!
